How to Find a Good Therapist

If you’re searching for a therapist in or around Lexington, KY, Jaylee Awakened Ministries is here to help.

Tips for Choosing a Good Therapist for Your Healing Journey

Seeking therapy takes courage, but it’s a critical aspect of healing and being a healthier human being – physically, mentally, and spiritually. As you make such an important move in your life, you want to be sure that you are choosing the best therapist for your needs. Below, Jaylee Awakened Ministries of Lexington, KY, shares a few tips to help.

1. Clarify What You Hope to Achieve

Not all therapists provide the same services. Some specialize in specific areas while others offer a wider range. It’s important to be clear about what you hope to accomplish through therapy in order to seek the right help. Our ministry specializes in helping people discover and live into their purpose, as well as deepening connections between couples and families.

2. Ask for Recommendations

Once you’ve determined your goals, ask friends, family members, coworkers, and members of your community for recommendations. Understandably, many people are uncomfortable with this step, as they don’t want anyone else knowing their personal business or challenges. However, you can phrase it in a non-personal or general way, or post anonymously on social media community pages.

3. Spend Some Time Online

After receiving recommendations, look the therapists up online. Read the testimonials from their previous or current clients.

You can also learn a great deal by reading the “About Me,” “Our Mission,” or “How We Operate” pages of their websites. Sometimes these pages alone can give you insight into whether you would be comfortable talking with a particular professional. At Jaylee Awakened Ministries, we offer Christian prophetic counseling and trauma-informed care. Each of our coaches also helps people with particular kinds of struggles.

4. Talk to Potential Therapists

When you’ve narrowed down your list, reach out. Most offer a consultation that allows you to get a good “feel” of the individual. In many cases, you can determine whether or not you’ll be comfortable talking out your problems with them.

5. Go with Your Gut

It’s hard to find someone who is 100 percent comfortable during their first therapy session. Sometimes, it takes several sessions to truly start feeling safe and opening up. However, we were given instincts for a reason. If your unease during a consultation or a session goes beyond the “getting to know you” jitters, it’s likely your gut is telling you that you should look for a new provider.
